Everything you need to know about model glue
To glue your models, made of wood or plastic, you can use a bi-component glu, bomb, hot melt, cyanoacrylate, etc.
Which model glue to use?
Which glue to use in modeling?
In modeling, the advantages of bonding are: The materials remain intact; The link is effective. Choose your model glues according to the support. Be aware that they all contain:
- Binder (the main component): often made with synthetic compounds, it causes adhesion and cohesion;
- Solvent;
- Additives: thickener, preservative, filler.
How to choose the right glue?
The selection of a model glue must take into account:
- The type of materials;
- The surface to be glued;
- The properties of the surfaces: rough, smooth, porous...
- Pretreatment: sanding, dusting, drying... Etc.
Cyanoacrylate glue
Cyanoacrylate glue is used to glue several supports:
- Plastic;
- Metal;
- Wood;
- Porcelain;
- Rubber;
- Etc.
So you can use it to glue your plastic models instead of Super Glue. The latter contains solvents that whiten during drying.
White glue
White glue is particularly used in modeling. It allows you to link:
- Elements of decorations;
- Wood;
- Cardboard;
- Etc.
To obtain a good consistency, dilute it with water or with the diluent offered by the brand you have chosen.
Glue bombshell
The bomb glue is perfect for:
- The realization of trees;
- Flocking;
- The collage of a background of décor.
Indeed, it has a high power of adhesion and allows to fix a permanent or repositionable support.
Hot melt glue
Hot melt glue comes in the form of hard sticks. It requires the use of a precision glue gun for model. This tool allows to heat the stick to liquefy it. Its application is a little tricky, because it cools quickly. This glue is also used to form reliefs and bind polystyrene structures.
Bi-component glue
The bi-component glue contains a pasty epoxy resin. You need to mix it with a hardener (volume 1 for 1). It is ideal for fixing plaster kits.
What glue for wooden model?
Wood glues for models are numerous on the market. For example, you can use a:
- White glue: the parboiling of chopsticks possible;
- Cyanoacrylate glue.
The use of a quick-setting glue is more convenient for fixing a wooden model. For example, opt for a:
- Heller model glue;
- Testors model glue;
- Etc.
What glue for plastic model?
Plastic model glue adopts a liquid form and has a slow drying time. It therefore makes it possible to position the parts without haste. Generally, it is applied with a fine brush or with a thin needle that you will find on its bottle. It melts the plastic slightly. Thus, the two pieces weld together. To join two pieces of plastic, you can use for example one: Revell model glue; Tamiya model glue; Etc.
