All you need to know about the Chess Set
How to choose a chess set and for which use ?
Chess is one of the oldest intellectual games in the world! As a reminder, the origin is not really established, it is said to have found its beginnings in India 2000 years before Jesus Christ. Over the millennia, this game has become part of everyday life and appeared in France in the 13th century. Today, it is declined in several versions as chess sets in wood, plastic, brass or metal to the greatest happiness of its followers. But then, how not to get lost among all these versions? First of all, it is important to define what kind of chess set you are looking for and for what use. If you are looking for a decorative chess set and are a big fan of the saga you will be delighted to discover the Harry Potter Hogwarts chessset with a gold plated wooden base and enamelled metal pieces or the Lord of the Rings chess set in pewter. You will also find "in-between" chess sets, derived from the Staunton style but serving as decoration for their worked design, being modernized and stylized. If on the other hand, you wish to start playing chess or are already a seasoned player, the classic wooden chess board will be perfect for you! Staunton pieces are created for serious game practice. The Staunton design will simplify and improve the overall view of the pieces on the board.
What is the composition of a chess board?
The game of chess has 32 pieces, 16 white and 16 black. Each side has 1 king, 1 queen, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 2 rooks and 8 pawns.
The king is the main piece of the game. It must be protected throughout the game and will become an active piece towards the end of the game.
The queen is the most mobile and powerful piece in the game. Losing it means almost losing the game.
Rooks are often the last pieces to enter the game. They are placed at the corners of the board and it is sometimes difficult to activate them.
The bishop is one of the long-range pieces and will always remain on the same color.
The knight changes color with each move. It is the only piece that can pass over another piece
The pawn is used to start the game and to free the other long-range pieces.
It is essential when choosing your chess pieces and your board to respect a coherence between pieces and board sizes.
For the Staunton design, we recommend the following rule:
- Size 3 pieces for 40 mm squares - Pieces size 4 for 45 mm squares - Pieces size 5 for 50 mm squares - Pieces size 6 for 55 mm boxes
You have all the necessary information to start playing chess. For some, you will also be able to carry them everywhere because the chessboards are foldable and magnetic!
