How do you build an RC boat?

Ship modelling is an activity that is accessible to everyone and involves piloting RC boats from a distance. Find out how to build one.

RC modelling: how do you build a radio-controlled boat?

What are the different makes of RC boat?

An RC boat is a miniature reproduction of a real boat. It is controlled remotely via a radio control system and allows you to navigate at speed on the surface of the water. Remote-controlled boats appeal to children and parents alike. Several brands sell RC boats, including:

● Joysway ;

● Traxxas ;

● Volantex ;

● Aquacraft ;

● Amewi ;

● Navicraft ;

● Proboat ;

● Dumas Boat ;

How do you motorise an RC boat?

Model boating is an activity open to everyone. It does not require any great navigational skills. However, to motorise an RC boat, some mechanical knowledge is essential. Before installing the electric motor, block all the air vents. Remove the propeller shaft from the stern tube to clean and grease it before reinstalling it.

To connect the motor to the propeller shaft, a motor mount must be made.

● Fix the electric motor in line with the propeller shaft while taking care to angle it at the same angle as the stern tube.

● After positioning it, locate the fixing holes and then remove the motor.

● Drill the holes, then reposition the motor in the RC boat.

How to test an RC boat

In principle, you only need to place the RC boat on the water to test it. Ideally, choose a clear pool so you don't lose it if it malfunctions. Using the remote control, pilot the RC boat at full speed to test its speed. Check the boat's stability during its navigation.

Which propeller for my RC boat?

The propeller propels the RC boat. It should be chosen with care. In RC modelling, this device is made of brass or nylon. For a pleasure boat, two-blade propellers are recommended. Three-blade propellers are used on RC tugs, while 4-blade propellers are suitable for models requiring greater traction. As for 6- and 7-blade propellers, they are reserved for aircraft carriers and submarines.

How do you mould an RC boat hull?

Moulding an RC boat hull is a meticulous operation. It involves using strips of fabric and resin. For the first layer, the strips of fabric must be laid down so that they soak up the resin applied to the mould with a brush or roller. Use a bubble blower to remove any air bubbles. The mould must dry overnight before demoulding.

Thermal or electric RC boats: what are the differences?

An RC boat is powered by either thermal or electric energy. When propelled by a thermal source, i.e. a coal-fired engine, it sails at a speed of 25 to 40 km/h. This type of remote-controlled boat is suitable for family use, as it is less powerful. As for the RC electric boat with a brushless motor, it sails at speeds of 45 to 80 km. This powerful model is reserved for adults and teenagers over the age of 14 who want to surf at speed.
