Radio-controlled (RC) modelling is an activity that involves building and flying a radio-controlled model aircraft to a precise scale. Far from being a simple hobby, this activity involves the responsibility of the person practising it. The models flown can vary according to age.

How do I get started with RC modelling?

To get started in RC model flying, you need to choose a miniature model. Ideally, you should join a model-building club to find out more about the discipline you want, the size of the model and the type of track to choose. You also need to prepare a budget. Taking up RC modelling is an investment, especially if you want a fully equipped model.

What's more, you'll need to know a thing or two about driving, as you'll need to know how to steer and brake at the right moment to keep up with the track. Training can take place in the garden, in a car park or on a large track.

What are the different engines used in RC modelling?

● Electric remote control car: it uses reliable and silent energy from Lithium Polymer (LiPo) or Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH). It has a range of 10 minutes.

● Thermal remote-controlled car: this has a 2-stroke engine fuelled by methanol. To operate, it uses an auxiliary electric starter, a pull starter or an integrated electric starter.

What are the different scales in RC modelling?

In RC modelling, the size of a miniature model (plane, boat, car, etc.) depends on its scale. Let's take the case of a radio-controlled car:

● At 1/100 scale, it is approximately 35 cm in size, i.e. almost 10 times smaller than a real car;

● At 1/4 scale, it is approximately 1 m long.
