The Bell UH-1 Iroquois, nicknamed “Huey”, is an American maneuver and assault helicopter, of which the prototype made its first flight on October 22, 1956. More than 16,000 civil and military units2 were produced and exported to more than 70 countries; it was developed in numerous versions, some of which were still flying in 2023.

Having a semi-monocoque light alloy fuselage, all variants of the Huey (with the exception of the UH-1Y) have two two-blade rotors. The main rotor, semi-rigid, is surmounted by two stabilizer bars arranged at right angles to the blades. Two small depth surfaces, hydraulically operated, are fixed on the tail boom.

The Vietnam War saw for the first time the helicopter take a preponderant place in the course of military operations. The Huey, through the variety of roles entrusted to it and its omnipresence, practically became a symbol of this conflict. UH-1s of the United States Army Aviation Branch flew 9,713,762 hours between October 1966 and 1973.
