The Spruance-class destroyers are the mainstay of carrier formations, with the primary mission being anti-submarine.
The class is the first U.S. Navy ship to incorporate an advanced gas turbine power plant.
The four LM-2500 gas turbines provide 80,000 horsepower, enabling speeds in excess of 30 knots, while also significantly reducing noise and saving fuel. In addition, the class is stable, has ample reserve buoyancy, good seaworthiness and good maneuverability.
With its advanced weapons systems, the Spirouns can track and attack high-speed submarines, surface ships, warplanes and shore targets around the clock, while also providing fire support for amphibious operations worldwide.
During Operation Desert Storm, the class fired 112 Tomahawk missiles at Iraq. Today, all Spruance-class destroyers have been decommissioned.

A. Anonymous The kit is excellent value for money. The moulding is crisp, the additional PE parts are very fine and the one piece hull a boon. There are a couple of disappointments, but not enough to lose a star given the price of the kit: the main issue is that there is no PE or kit railings for the main deck, which would not be significant if PE railings had not been supplied for other decks. All in all, it is a very fine kit and a real bargain. *
