What is the purpose of the SBD DAUNTLESS?

The SBD DAUNTLESS was for almost 4 years one of the main American combat aircraft. During the first half of 1942, it was involved in more operations than any other American aircraft. Its main mission was to sink ships that came within torpedo range. It eventually proved its critics wrong by sinking more ships than any other aircraft involved in the Pacific War.
